Friday we took a look at a large variety of news and magazine premium WordPress themes, and yesterday we took a look at small business premium WordPress themes. Today I wanted to cover my favorite type of premium WordPress theme, this time focusing specifically on the premium blog WordPress themes. When the premium WordPress market was originally formed, pretty much every theme was focused specifically on behaving like a content management system. There were some great themes released, but i [...]
A reader writes in: I’m developing a new theme and I’m having trouble getting duplicate posts from showing when running two loops (one standard loop and one from a specific category). Even when I copied the specific code from directly from the codex, it was not working. The Codex article the reader mentioned was regarding the Loop. Although the example shows how to avoid a single duplicate post, it doesn’t show how to avoid duplicating multiple posts. Here’s how to sho [...]
I had a few minutes at Starbucks before a client meeting yesterday so I decided to tackle the next plugin on my idea list. With the Login Logo plugin, you change the logo on WordPress’s login screen to an image of your choice via a simple options screen. It’s pretty much a simple two-step process. First, you upload the desired logo with the built-in (meaning framed) uploader. The dimensions can’t exceed 290px by 100px or it’ll get chopped off. Finally just copy and paste [...]
Yesterday we took a look at some of the best news and magazine premium WordPress themes.  Today I wanted to take a look at another area of the premium WordPress themes market, this time focusing on the themes being designed specifically for small businesses in mind. Some small business premium WordPress themes are created with very specific businesses in mind, while most can easily be adapted to just about any small business that needs a content management system or business blog setup.  [...]
Do you find you switch WordPress themes a lot? If you do, Chris Pearson has taken the time to write a great post about using WordPress functions to ease the transition between themes.  The idea is to put all your design elements in one file and then move the file over to your new theme every time you switch, saving you the time of re-coding the specific elements you like to see in your blog’s theme.  In his post, Chris provides the functions file to get you started, teaches you ho [...]
I’ve updated my Projects page, which was missing quite some stuff and should now be up to date and not missing any of the stuff I’ve coded in the past few years. Hey, this page is starting to give me a little warm feeling of pride ;) Share This © Ozh for planetOzh, 2008. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Who's linking ? Technorati [...]
My most popular stuff on del.icio.us just got past 1000 bookmarks, and my feed reader count is now just above 500. I love you all! Share This © Ozh for planetOzh, 2008. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Who's linking ? Technorati [...]
As I mentioned in a previous post, one of the things Hack WordPress is most known for is our WordPress theme galleries.  Because of this, we have worked really hard to maintain them by both adding new themes as they are released, as well as removing older themes that are either outdated, are no longer available, or are no longer supported by their authors.  One of the most common requests I get via our contact form is to break apart our galleries into more of a niche focused display of [...]
As you might know, weblogtoolscollection just started their WordPress Plugin Competition 2.5. The WordPress Plugin Competition is in it’s third incarnation targeting the 2.5 release of WordPress. Last year the contest generated some great plugins like Who Sees Ads, WordPress Automatic Upgrade, MyDashboard, and the grand prize winner, OneClick. Now that it’s happening again this year, the WPCandy team thought about entering the competition, winning the prize and giving it to our read [...]
This guest post was written by Jean-Baptiste Jung, who maintains a blog (written in French) that covers WordPress.  If you have webmaster or WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for Hack WordPress, please contact us. Tired of your old navigation? So, what about creating a Magazine-style dropdown menu? I propose here a dropdown menu listing your pages and sub pages, including one last item to show up your categories directly in the menu. HTML and PHP We will start by using [...]
StayPress was announced yesterday (and pimped by none other than Matt Mullenweg), and it looks promising. In the words of the creator, Barry: StayPress is a collection of plugins that will turn a standard vanilla installation of WordPress or WordPress MU into a property management and bookings system. Of course when I say Property, I actually mean any bookable resource of which there is a finite availability. So the StayPress system will be able to manage property rentals, hotel room rentals, co [...]

Not 21 years old, but that is now the number of people employed by Automattic. Kontera is one of the providers of in-text ads, hated by some (usually readers), and loved by others (mainly publishers making ad dollars). If you’re a Kontera user running a WordPress blog, it just got a lot easier to add the ContentLink tag to your blog, and block out parts of it, with the release of the official Kontera WordPress plugin. Instructions and download links in the Kontera blog post. [...]
If you consider yourself a WordPress freelancer or at least have good enough hacking skills to do some paid work with WordPress, you may be wondering what the best ways are to find work?  Over at the Planet Ozh blog, Ozh recently gave some great tips on how to find WordPress work.  The first tip? Subscribe to the WP-Pro mailing list, where job offers are regularly available.  These jobs can range from theme design, coding help, or even basics like installing WordPress. Other plac [...]
I updated my Fun with Categories plugin this morning. The update is a relatively minor bug fix, but as many of you weren’t subscribing when I created, and last updated, this plugin I thought I would add a quick introduction to it. Fun with Categories is the first real plugin I ever wrote for WordPress. I wrote it for a specific website and have since released it for everyone. So what does it do? Fun with categories adds the ability to link to posts that are in both of the two selected cate [...]
Yesterday I wrote a post titled When Has Stealing Content Gone to Far?  At the time of publishing that post, I wasn’t really sure how it would be received because of the subject matter.  So far all feedback has been pretty positive, so I decided to write a quick follow up post talking about how to deal with getting your content stolen. Thanks to Laurence for the idea. As most people should know, when you publish content, pictures, or whatever else on the internet, there is always [...]

This guest post was written by Hayes Potter, a 13 year old programmer and web developer that gives webmasters tips on protecting their website from common hacking techniques. If you have webmaster or WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for Hack WordPress, please contact us. I absolutely love the i3Â WordPress theme. I used it for my site for about a month, and I had no problems for what I needed. It features a “mac” look, has the Mac OS X classic background that [...]
A few weeks ago I posted a list of 30 improvements I’d like to see in WordPress 2.6. Item number one? Customizable color schemes - possibly with COLOURlovers integration. Two weeks later, I’ve found a plugin that hits the nail on the head. The Admin CSS Designer Tool is an amazing new plugin that introduces the ability to change your site’s admin colors with built-in COLOURlovers functionality. Looking at the video demo on Ozh’s blog, it looks like a pretty functional [...]
WordPress weekly is a great weekly podcast, about WordPress, by Jeffro. Last week’s episode was an open mic episode where we discussed topics like Woopra, and WordPress brand restrictions and it was pretty interesting. Notable about the last show was the announcement that Matt Mullenweg will be appearing on the next show on the 23rd. This one will be unmissable! [...]
If your blog has over 100 subscribers on it, it is pretty likely that your blog is probably getting scraped, as they seem to be everywhere anymore.  Hack WordPress currently has 3 blogs scraping its content every time we publish a post, so we’ve become pretty familiar with them.  But that is not actually what I’m referring to when I came up with the title of this post. What I’m talking about are people that manually reprint an entire post on their “legitimate” [...]
Two months ago, I wrote an article about per-user admin color schemes that WordPress 2.5 brought in its bag of new features. A few days laters, I received an email from COLOURlovers‘ chief lover, Darius, letting me know about the API they were about to release (and did released since, of course) At this time, I had no spare time to work on it but the idea grew in my mind, and a few weeks ago I started coding something really fun. You might have seen the teasing earlier this month, and if n [...]
I never get this right. There are times when I will be reading a post and it feels as if the chronological order of comments would make better sense. At other times, such as the comments on this post on IP Democracy (which has newest comments on top), seems opposite. I actually found it quite difficult and counter intuitive to read through the comments on that post to follow the story as it unfolded. Scrolling upwards on a post is just plain weird. On more popular posts, readers tend to complain [...]
If you take a step back and look at the successful premium WordPress themes available today, the first thing you’ll notice is that they offer much more than the standard blogging template that most free WordPress themes offer. You’ll find magazine themes, news themes, video themes, social networking themes, and all sorts of other themes that are designed to function as content management systems.  In looking at the future of WordPress, my hope is that the standard build of WordP [...]
The long delayed version 1.5.1 of WordPress MU has just been released. If you don’t want to read the rest of this post head to the download page and grab the zip file or tarball but make sure you come back here to read the upgrade docs. This release of the popular multi-blog version of WordPress is synced with WordPress 2.5.1 and so has all the great features as well as bug and security fixes that went into that release. Upgrading from a previous release As long as you haven’t modifi [...]
Every blogger, whether a WordPress user or not, will probably come up against a problem many bloggers face: writers’ block. Skribit promises to alleviate that by providing widget code that you can add to Blogger, TypePad, self-hosted WordPress, or any other HTML webpage. This widget allows your readers to suggest new topics or ask for advice. The suggested topics can even be voted on social-media style. This setup is a win-win, since the readers get to suggest and vote on content, while th [...]
I have started a very significant redesign of this site and it occured to me that my home page isn’t very useful. I am considering doing away with it. The move away from standard blog templates, where the home page contains the last three to five posts, to a more magazine / news style means that often the home page doesn’t contain anything the visitor actually wants. My current home page features an excerpt from the latest article, a category list, and a tabbed area to promote my too [...]
Since the 2.x release of WordPress, the blogging platform has more and more been praised because of its versatility. Obviously, WordPress is mostly known as a blog platform, but depending on your creativity, you can do much more with the very flexible platform. No limits are set and over the next weeks we will dig a little deeper into some of the ways WordPress can be used, helping you with the (coding) basics to use WP as more than a blogging platform. For now I will list the different options [...]
